Ebook About
In this celebrated memoir and exploration of identity, cancer transforms the author’s face, childhood, and the rest of her life.At age nine, Lucy Grealy was diagnosed with a potentially terminal cancer. When she returned to school with a third of her jaw removed, she faced the cruel taunts of classmates. It took her twenty years of living with a distorted self-image and more than thirty years of reconstructive procedures before she could come to terms with her appearance. In this lyrical and strikingly candid memoir, Grealy tells her story of great suffering and remarkable strength without sentimentality and with considerable wit. She captures what it is like as a child and a young adult to be torn between two warring impulses: to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly to be perfect.New York Times Notable Book “This is a young woman’s first book, the story of her own life, and both book and life are unforgettable.” —New York Times “Engaging and engrossing, a story of grace as well as cruelty, and a demonstration of [Grealy's] own wit and style and class."—Washington Post Book World

Book Autobiography of a Face Review :

What an amazing story. I too, faced many childhood facial surgeries, though not for something as vicious as cancer.. But it does affect how a girl sees herself. This woman not only had to beat cancer and the damage that the cancer "cures" did to her face, but she also had to find ways to survive the constant feelings of never ever being pretty enough to be loved.I read some reviews on Goodreads by people who said she was a whiner. Maybe because I had a taste of what she went through, I realize how devastating it can be to your self-esteem to have facial surgery after facial surgery after facial surgery. Always swollen and bruised. Always "knowing" you are damaged goods; ugly and unlovable. They are not criticizing the writing or the story, just the fact that they had to look at something "ugly".This is a true story and worth the read. Especially if you know someone with a disfiguring illness or damage. It gives some insight into what it's like...not just the physical trauma, but the damage done to their self-view. The only cure for that is love.
This was a New York Times Notable Book. It is a beautifully written, unsentimental book by a very gifted, highly intelligent author. In it, the author tells the reader about a tragedy that befell her, one that would overshadow her entire life.At the age of nine, the author was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in her mandible. In the early 1970s, which is when this occurred, the survival rate from this cancer was minimal. The removal of the tumor would leave the author facially disfigured, which would mar her life forevermore. Years of painful radiation and intensive chemotherapy would follow. Her bravery in the face of such treatments was laudable in one so young. When these painful treatments were over, her young life lay in tatters. Physical isolation would ensue, and she was often the subject of mockery. Years of facial reconstructive surgery lay ahead of her with disappointing results, leaving the author mentally and physically depleted. Despite well over thirty such surgeries, the author would always look different. The physical beauty, for which she longed, would forever elude her, always out of reach. One thing that stands out about this author is her total self-absorption and her seeming lack of empathy for others. Even as to her own family, who are mentioned almost reluctantly, as if she had to do so, her coldness is apparent. The death of her father is noted with little or no feeling. It is a bit jarring. I later saw her in interviews about this book and found her insufferable. Her self-absorption was so readily apparent. She also radiated unhappiness. It is with little surprise that I learned that she later committed suicide. Still, she was a very very gifted writer, and this book stands in tribute to her talent.
